ChatGPT Dots Custom Rules Generator

Build ChatGPT Dots custom rules for the actions you care about. Define the people, resources and scope, then copy an editable description and select an action policy.

Create ChatGPT Dots Custom Rules

Name the action and its boundaries. Generate a description, edit it, then choose the matching policy in ChatGPT.

Examples fill the form for you to review.

Your rule description

Generate a description to see the policy to select separately in ChatGPT.

Enter an action, people or resources, and a scope to begin.

Free, no login. Your inputs stay in this page and are not uploaded or saved.

Choose an approval behavior

The action description tells your dot which action the rule covers. The policy determines how it should proceed. Choose the behavior you want for that particular action, then select the same option when adding the rule in ChatGPT.

The generator starts with Ask before taking action, so your dot asks for approval. Take action when you say so allows an explicit request to cover the action; without one, your dot asks immediately before acting. Take action without asking lets the described action proceed without an approval request. Hand off to you asks you to perform it yourself.

A useful scope names a recipient group, folder, calendar, account or spending limit. “Send customer messages” leaves the audience and purpose open. “Reply to customers in my support inbox about existing tickets; exclude marketing” gives you a much clearer boundary to review. Use one rule for a recognizable action rather than combining purchases, deletions and publishing into a single description.

The five examples in the tool show different boundaries: customer replies separate support from marketing; shared file deletion names a folder and exclusions; calendar changes identify the event; purchases specify the item, vendor and budget; publishing names the reviewed draft and destination. Load any example and adapt it to your work.

Add your custom rule in ChatGPT

  1. Review the generated description. Replace example details with the people, resources and limits you intend to use.
  2. Copy the description, then open Settings → Personalization → Custom rules under Permissions in ChatGPT.
  3. Select Add, paste the description, and choose the policy shown beside the output.
  4. Select Add rule, then check that both the description and policy match your intention.

Saved rules apply to your dot in the same account. App and computer access are managed separately, and built-in safeguards and required login confirmations still apply. If a workspace disables custom rules, saved rules do not apply there. These controls guide your dot’s behavior; review the work it carries out.

Writing style and update preferences belong in your conversation. Use action rules for decisions such as sending, editing, buying or deleting. For the wider setup workflow, read the OpenAI Dots guide. If the feature or its controls are missing, use the ChatGPT Dots availability checker to find the relevant access steps.

The steps and four policies were checked against OpenAI’s Controls documentation on October 1, 2026.
