OpenAI Dots: What It Is and How to Use It
OpenAI Dots is a personal ChatGPT agent powered by GPT-6 Astra. Give it an ongoing responsibility, connect the sources it needs and review its work as the task develops.
OpenAI Dots is an always-on personal agent inside ChatGPT: it keeps track of assigned work, uses connected sources and brings you results or decisions between conversations. ChatGPT Dots runs on GPT-6 Astra with a cloud computer and browser. Start with one responsibility you already manage repeatedly, such as keeping a launch checklist current, rather than a vague instruction to “help with everything.”
What OpenAI Dots does
A dot can research a question, analyze information, prepare documents or build software while you continue talking to it. You can add a changed deadline or a new source to the existing responsibility. For the product’s release context, our Dots launch report records the September 29 announcement; this guide focuses on getting useful work started.
Three parts of that workflow are worth separating. The responsibility defines the outcome. Connections supply information and permitted tools. Action instructions describe when an external change needs your decision. Keeping these distinct makes a missed result easier to diagnose: you can correct the objective, connect the missing source or clarify a decision boundary.
For example, a weekly project check does not need permission to send customer emails. It might need a shared checklist and the relevant planning channel. Begin with that smaller information set and ask for a draft update before adding an action that changes someone else’s work.
Who can use ChatGPT Dots?
The current rollout includes Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 for users over 18 outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out worldwide; Enterprise needs administrator enablement. An eligible plan does not guarantee the feature has reached an account yet. Use the Dots availability checker to separate plan, country or region, age, desktop setup and workspace checks.
Create your dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser. After that, you can use the same dot in the mobile app when its supporting update is available. Mobile web is not supported. A search for “OpenAI Dot” or “ChatGPT Dot” normally refers to this same product, not a separate subscription.
How to set up your dot
Open Dots in ChatGPT and complete the introduction. Connect relevant apps during setup, or add them later. The desktop app also offers local computer access. You can personalize the dot’s name and appearance after creating it.
Choose connections by the job, not by how many services you use. A calendar task might need a calendar connection; a repository task may need code and files. A messaging channel provides a way to communicate, but does not automatically connect an inbox or grant computer access. Cloud work can continue with your device off; work that uses your local computer needs that device online with the ChatGPT app open.
Give your dot its first task
The following is an original starter task for a small release team. Replace the named sources and time zone before using it:
Keep the Orchard launch checklist current through October 15. Read the checklist and the connected launch channel. Track open decisions, owners and due dates. Put routine changes in a short checklist update. Tell me in ChatGPT when a due date moves earlier, a blocker has no owner or you need a decision. Draft any message to another person for my review. Each weekday at 9 AM Eastern, summarize what needs attention and confirm the schedule you create.
This example supplies an outcome, sources, an end date, an update destination and interrupt conditions. It also separates drafting from sending. Review the first output against the actual checklist: are owners correct, are dates interpreted in the right time zone, and did it identify the decisions you care about? Correct those details in the same conversation.
Set action rules and review ongoing work
Use conversation instructions for preferences such as the length of updates. Use custom rules for recurring action boundaries, such as approval before sending a message to a customer. Our custom rules generator turns an action, resource and scope into an editable description, then tells you which handling option to select in ChatGPT.
Open Activity in the desktop app to inspect delegated work and respond to requests. Check Scheduled for recurring tasks. Pausing the dot’s main task, stopping a delegated task and canceling a schedule are separate operations; none reverses a completed action. Review the relevant task or schedule when ending a responsibility.
Pricing and usage: what to check
Dots conversations do not consume the ordinary ChatGPT conversation allowance. Tasks delegated to Work or Codex use those products’ limits. OpenAI describes a plan allowance for deeper work, with extended limits during the first month after launch. Check the current product allowance before assigning a large batch of work; an API token-cost estimate is not a Dots usage estimate.
The practical next step is one small responsibility with a result you can inspect. Once its sources, updates and approval boundary work for you, add a second responsibility rather than enlarging an unclear first task.
