Codex CLI 0.159.2: Windows Fix and Sol Catalogs

Codex CLI 0.159.2 is the current patch in the 0.159 train. Install it with npm install -g @openai/codex@0.159.2. OpenAI says the patch suppresses console windows flashing on Windows when Codex starts background processes and sandboxed commands. It follows 0.159.1, which added GPT-6.1 Sol as the default model in the bundled, Amazon Bedrock Mantle and Amazon Bedrock Runtime catalogs. This combined account keeps the version boundary exact. Version 0.159.2 contains the Windows fix; it does not newly add GPT-6.1 Sol. Version 0.159.1 contains the catalog work; it does not establish a universal default across ChatGPT, Codex cloud, the desktop app or every existing CLI session. Teams upgrading now should install 0.159.2, then verify the Windows behavior and the catalog path they actually use.

Codex CLI 0.159.2 fixes Windows console flashes

OpenAI’s release note names two launch paths: background processes and sandboxed commands. On Windows, those child-process launches could briefly create visible console windows. Version 0.159.2 suppresses that flashing. The full changelog compares rust-v0.159.1 with rust-v0.159.2 and lists a backport specifically for Windows console suppression, making this a narrowly scoped bug-fix patch rather than another feature release.

The fix is visual and process-launch related. The changelog does not say that it changes a command’s sandbox policy, approval requirement, filesystem access or network access. It also does not say that every Windows terminal issue is resolved. A useful verification therefore reproduces the named paths: start one harmless background process and one harmless sandboxed command, observe whether an extra console window appears, and separately confirm that the expected approval and sandbox boundaries remain in place.

Windows users affected by the flash have the clearest reason to update immediately. Other users may still prefer 0.159.2 because it includes the preceding catalog patch. Confirm the installed version before testing; a package-manager cache or older binary earlier on PATH can otherwise make a correct installation look ineffective.

Codex CLI 0.159.1 added the GPT-6.1 Sol catalogs

The preceding 0.159.1 patch added GPT-6.1 Sol to three client catalogs. OpenAI describes GPT-6.1 Sol as the default in the bundled, Amazon Bedrock Mantle and Amazon Bedrock Runtime catalogs. This gives the updated client current metadata for selecting GPT-6.1 Sol through its bundled route and through the two Bedrock routes.

The word ‘default’ is catalog-scoped: it applies to the bundled, Amazon Bedrock Mantle and Amazon Bedrock Runtime catalogs named in the release, not to every ChatGPT or Codex surface, workspace or running session. A saved profile may still name a different model, a workspace may constrain availability, and a session already in progress may not represent a fresh catalog choice. The changelog also does not say that the 0.159.2 Windows patch changes this catalog behavior.

Mantle and Runtime are listed separately, so an AWS-backed deployment should be checked against the route it actually uses. A catalog entry helps the client recognize and present a model, but it does not by itself prove provider authorization, regional availability, credentials, quotas or a successful request. The earlier Codex CLI 0.157.0 report covers the original Sol and Luna Bedrock integration; the 0.159.1 delta is the addition of GPT-6.1 Sol to those catalog paths.

What changed after Codex CLI 0.159.0

The broader Codex CLI 0.159.0 release added instant interrupt, transcript and warning changes, richer Mermaid rendering, app-server history pagination, platform fixes and removals. The two patches do not repeat that release. Version 0.159.1 updates model catalogs, and 0.159.2 fixes one Windows launch behavior.

GPT-6.1 Sol was also announced separately before these client patches. The GPT-6.1 Sol launch report covers model pricing, access, context and reasoning settings. The current official model page continues to identify gpt-6.1-sol with a 1,050,000-token context window, a 128,000-token maximum output and low, medium, high, xhigh and max reasoning efforts. The patch train does not announce a new model ID, price, context limit or reasoning mode.

This distinction matters for diagnosis. If GPT-6.1 Sol is absent from a 0.159.0 catalog, the client version is relevant. If it appears but a request is denied, provider or account access is the next question. If an ordinary Chat conversation uses another model, that observation does not contradict a bundled CLI catalog default. How to verify the two-patch update

First, install 0.159.2 and confirm codex –version reports 0.159.2. Second, on Windows, exercise one background launch and one sandboxed command that previously caused a visible console flash. Record the terminal, command type and observed behavior rather than treating a quiet installation alone as proof of the fix.

Third, start a disposable fresh session without a model override and record what the bundled catalog selects. Then repeat with an explicit gpt-6.1-sol selection. This separates default selection from direct selection. For Amazon Bedrock, record whether the route is Mantle or Runtime and test only a configured, authorized environment. Do not infer that success on one route proves the other.

Finally, preserve the last working model and configuration until the checks pass. If the binary still reports an older version, resolve PATH or package-manager precedence before debugging model access. If the catalog recognizes GPT-6.1 Sol but execution fails, investigate the provider boundary rather than rolling the failure into the Windows fix.

Codex CLI 0.159.2 is the right current install because it combines both adjacent changes without overstating either one. The verified result is a quieter Windows child-process launch plus the 0.159.1 GPT-6.1 Sol catalog additions already underneath it—not a second model launch, a new Bedrock service announcement or a product-wide default-model change.
