How to access GPT-6 today
Access depends on the product: GPT-6 Pro is rolling out in ChatGPT, while GPT-6 Astra is also rolling out in Work and Codex for eligible plans.
GPT-6 access at a glance
To access GPT-6, choose ChatGPT, Work, Codex or the API, sign in to the correct account, then check whether its model is available. ChatGPT 6 is the conversational product; ChatGPT Work and Codex are separate work surfaces; the API is a separate developer service. GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, is rolling out in ChatGPT for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise. Plus includes Astra in Work and Codex as rollout reaches the account. Eligibility is not proof of availability today.
GPT-6 access requirements and entry points
| Product | Current eligibility | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | GPT-6 Pro is rolling out for Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise; Enterprise also needs workspace model permission | Sign in at ChatGPT and check the model picker |
| Work | Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise can receive Astra as rollout reaches the account; usage is separate from Chat | Open Work in ChatGPT and check the available model |
| Codex | Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise can receive Astra as rollout reaches the account; Codex uses the plan allowance or API billing path you choose | Use Codex in the latest ChatGPT desktop app or Codex CLI |
| API | A developer organization must have access to the model ID gpt-6-astra; API billing and limits are separate from ChatGPT |
Check the API model reference, organization and project |
Rollout is gradual and availability can differ between Chat, Work and Codex. Treat the model picker, workspace controls and API model list as the account-level source of truth. Allowances depend on plan, task size, reasoning effort and credits.
How to access GPT-6 in ChatGPT
- Sign in to the account with the intended ChatGPT plan.
- Use the model picker in ChatGPT and look for GPT-6 Pro. Pro-model limits are finite; a Pro subscription does not mean unlimited GPT-6 Pro use.
- If you use Business or Enterprise, ask a workspace owner or administrator to verify model-access permissions. Enterprise access can be unavailable even when the plan is eligible.
- If GPT-6 Pro is absent, record the account, workspace, product and the exact limit or rollout message before contacting support.
The release date page explains rollout timing; it does not grant access.
Access GPT-6 Astra in Work or Codex
Work is intended for longer, multi-step deliverables; Codex is for software development. Sign in with your ChatGPT account, choose the available model, and begin with a small task whose result you can inspect. The prompt library has a reusable workflow request for this first run.
For Codex, update the client before troubleshooting. OpenAI requires Codex CLI 0.153.0 or newer for Astra and recommends the latest ChatGPT desktop app. Client requirements do not guarantee model rollout.
When signing in to Codex with ChatGPT, usage follows the ChatGPT plan’s Work and Codex allowance. When using your own API key, usage follows API pricing and organization permissions. Do not treat a ChatGPT subscription as API credit.
Access GPT-6 Astra through the API
Use the exact model ID gpt-6-astra in an API project that can see the model. Confirm the organization, billing state, project permissions and current rate limits. The API guide owns the request example and integration details. API pricing and access are independent of ChatGPT plans; see the pricing guide for account and cost context.
Troubleshoot missing GPT-6 access
Check these in order:
- Confirm the signed-in account and, for managed workspaces, the selected workspace.
- Confirm you are checking the intended surface: Chat, Work, Codex or API.
- Confirm the plan is eligible for that surface and that a workspace administrator has enabled the relevant model access.
- Update the desktop app or Codex CLI to the required version.
- Check the displayed allowance, credit balance and reset time. Wait for a reset or use another available model when appropriate.
Rollout, eligibility and actual availability are separate facts. Buying credits does not provide early rollout access, and reaching a Work or Codex limit does not prove that every ChatGPT feature is unavailable.
A useful next task
Start with a short document, small code change or bounded research question. State the input, output, constraints and what must remain unchanged. Save the result and source evidence so you can tell whether the model was used. Continue with the working guide or pricing.
