ChatGPT Pets Update: Quick Chat and Windows Appshots
OpenAI’s September 11 update adds Quick Chat to Pets and Windows Appshots. Case follow-up: clicking Pet no longer triggers our earlier error after updating.
ChatGPT Pets gained Quick Chat controls in OpenAI’s September 11, 2026 desktop update, alongside the arrival of Appshots on Windows. The practical change is that you can ask a question while another app is in front, then return to the full conversation when you need it. This article explains the update, the shortcuts to try, and the differences that matter when choosing a workflow.

What changed in the ChatGPT Pets update?
The release combines two related actions: starting a conversation from the floating controls and supplying context from another window. It also adds a bell for checking thread activity. Windows users gain Appshots; macOS users can route an appshot into the floating controls under the documented conditions. OpenAI groups these changes under desktop release 26.908 in its September 11 changelog.
The distinction matters when testing the update. Opening a small chat box, capturing a window, and reviewing the resulting answer are separate steps. Check each step on its own before handing the assistant a longer task. A working keyboard shortcut alone does not establish that the intended context reached the right conversation.
How to open Quick Chat from Pets
In the desktop app, open Settings, then Pets. Choose a companion, or choose Mini if you prefer the controls without an animated character. The default shortcut is Option+Space on macOS and Windows+Alt+P on Windows. You can change Show pet in the keyboard shortcut settings.
Enter your request in Quick Chat and send it with Enter. Add context with @ and choose a skill with $. Use the bell to inspect active threads and open the full conversation. A conversation started from these controls is outside a project; begin inside the relevant project when its existing context matters.

ChatGPT Appshots on Windows and macOS
An Appshot supplies the frontmost window’s screenshot and available text. Press both Alt keys on Windows, or both Command keys on macOS. Complete any permission setup, inspect the attachment, and then describe the task. A window capture does not guarantee access to an entire document: some apps expose only what is visible.

OpenAI’s Appshots reference explains destination settings. Automatic normally starts a new chat, but uses a chat you interacted with in the previous 60 seconds; consecutive captures stay together. Select Current chat or New chat if you want an explicit destination.
Our recommendation is to check the receiving conversation before sending instructions. This is especially useful when several unrelated tasks are open. Give the attachment a clear purpose instead of relying on the assistant to infer what you want from the window alone.
A practical way to test the update
The following is an illustrative workflow, not an OpenAI benchmark or a claim that we tested every app version. It is designed to help you evaluate whether the new controls fit your own work.
Start with a document that contains information you are comfortable sharing. Open a short section, capture it, and ask for a narrowly defined result: identify the decision being requested, list the facts visible in the attachment, and separate unanswered questions. Compare the response with the window before asking for a rewrite or a larger analysis.
A useful original request is: “Use the attached window to draft a decision note. State the requested decision, the evidence shown, and the information still missing. Keep assumptions separate. Do not fill gaps with invented dates, costs, or commitments.”
That example gives you three observable checks. Did the answer refer to the correct document? Did it distinguish evidence from assumptions? Did it provide a decision note rather than a generic summary? If one check fails, adjust that part of the request and repeat with the same material. Changing the document and the instruction together makes the comparison harder to interpret.
For a recurring task, save the successful wording with placeholders for the document and desired output. If Pets or Appshots do not appear
Check the desktop app version, the configured shortcuts, and any workspace restrictions. On macOS, the Appshots documentation also identifies screen recording and accessibility permissions as relevant to capturing the window and its available text. Follow the official permission instructions for the feature you are actually using.
Keep a short troubleshooting record: operating system, app version, shortcut pressed, which window was in front, and what appeared afterward. This is our suggested way to make a support report reproducible. Record whether the failure happens before capture, while attaching context, or after sending the message. Those observations are more useful than treating every problem as a failed model response.

The announcement does not provide a universal account rollout deadline. Missing controls should not be treated as proof that you need a different subscription. Check the current official instructions and your workspace’s settings before making a purchase or changing a working setup.
