ChatGPT Hit a Snag on macOS: Hide Pet Fixed My Panel

In my macOS case, Hide pet dismissed the ChatGPT hit a snag panel. This is a community workaround to try; the cause and affected versions remain unknown.

My macOS case

On my Mac, ChatGPT kept showing “ChatGPT hit a snag.” Try again, Update ChatGPT, and quitting and reopening the app did not clear the panel.

  1. In the ChatGPT macOS app, use the built-in Pet’s Hide pet action.
  2. In this case, the error panel disappeared after that action.

You can try this community workaround if you see the same panel; it may not work for everyone.

Official general troubleshooting guidance

OpenAI’s general error-message guide, checked September 11, 2026, suggests:

  • Check OpenAI Status for an ongoing incident.
  • For an unresponsive conversation, try a new chat. To narrow the scope, compare the behavior in another browser, device or network.
  • If the issue persists, contact OpenAI Support with the error, timestamps and relevant diagnostic details.

These are provider recommendations for general ChatGPT errors, separate from the community workaround above.
