ChatGPT for Word: Launch, Setup and Key Limits
OpenAI brings ChatGPT to Microsoft Word, with drafting and editing in a sidebar, plan limits and separate workspace and Microsoft 365 controls.
ChatGPT for Word launched on September 17, 2026, bringing an AI sidebar into Microsoft Word for drafting, summarizing, editing selected text and adjusting document formatting. It is available on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, subject to plan limits. Word uses the same Microsoft add-in as Excel and PowerPoint. OpenAI’s release notes.
What ChatGPT for Word adds to your document workflow
The launch puts several common writing tasks inside the document editor: turn notes into a draft, condense a document, revise a passage, or change headings and formatting. The release notes also say Word shares the usage allowance for Codex and other premium features on plans that include it. Availability does not mean unlimited use. Launch details.
Our reading of the practical change is straightforward: a writer can try an edit in the document’s working environment and assess the result there. That makes a small, measurable first task useful. Decide what improvement you want before asking for a rewrite, such as a clearer recommendation or a shorter introduction. Judge the result against that objective rather than accepting it because it sounds more polished.
How to install the ChatGPT Word add-in
Start from the Microsoft Marketplace link in the official release notes, install the ChatGPT add-in, then open ChatGPT in Word and sign in.
The product guide adds two setup details: launch ChatGPT from Word’s ribbon and select the intended organizational workspace after signing in. Workspace administrators control Word access in ChatGPT; Microsoft 365 administrators must also permit the add-in. OpenAI says Word will be enabled by default starting October 1, 2026. Installation and administrator guidance.
Our suggested troubleshooting sequence follows those separate checkpoints. If the ribbon entry is missing, record that symptom for the Microsoft 365 administrator. If it opens but the intended workspace is unavailable, record the signed-in account and ask the workspace administrator to check access. Avoid reporting both situations simply as “ChatGPT does not work”: the distinction gives the person investigating a specific starting point.
For related workspace background, see our September Enterprise administration update. General product entry points are covered separately in the GPT-6 access guide.
Limits, skills and apps to check first
OpenAI identifies three limitations: complex formatting, tables and charts may need manual repair; other local files cannot be referenced; and important facts, figures, citations and edits require checking. Word’s standard pricing uses tokens at the chosen model’s API rates. Product limitations and usage.
A limited exception applies from September 17 through September 30, 2026: ChatGPT Business and Enterprise customers can use GPT-5.6 Sol in ChatGPT for Word during a free preview. The stated preview is specific to Word and does not establish free access for other plans or models. Official rate card.
Skills can supply reusable instructions. Supported apps can provide external context, subject to plan, workspace and source permissions. Plugins are unsupported. Add-in conversations are separate from ChatGPT history, and ChatGPT Memory and skills do not carry over. Skills support therefore does not imply automatic inheritance of an existing setup. Skills, apps and continuity.
For a first attempt, we recommend a self-contained request that includes the context the editor needs. A reference such as “use the tone from yesterday’s chat” leaves an avoidable dependency. Instead, describe the audience and tone in the request itself. If a task depends on another document, identify the needed passage and supply it deliberately rather than assuming a filename gives access to its contents.
A practical first editing exercise
Here is an original, untested example for evaluating the feature. Create a short fictional project update with three sections: progress, a delivery risk and a decision required from management. Use invented names and numbers so you can concentrate on the editing behavior.
Select the decision section and ask: “Make the requested decision explicit in the opening sentence. Keep every date, amount and owner unchanged. Explain any ambiguity before proposing replacement text.”
This request gives you several observable checks. Did the proposed version identify who must decide? Did it preserve the deadline? Did it turn an uncertain estimate into a promise? Did it silently remove a qualification? A shorter paragraph is not automatically a better one if the requested decision becomes less precise.
For a second pass, request a brief summary of the whole update. Compare each summary sentence with the section that supports it. If the summary introduces an unsupported benefit or omits the delivery risk, record that specific failure and revise the request. This makes the exercise useful even when the first answer needs correction.
Finally, inspect the document visually. Look for awkward page breaks, changed heading levels, inconsistent numbering and crowded tables. These are suggested acceptance checks, not a claim that we tested the add-in or that it will produce any particular defect. Our prompt library offers additional task examples to adapt.
Business data and the rollout decision
OpenAI’s enterprise privacy policy says business data is not used for model training by default, unless customers explicitly opt in. Administrators control connected internal sources, and connected apps respect existing permissions. Enterprise administrators can set retention periods; the policy also explains circumstances for authorized access and legally required retention. These business commitments should not be assumed to describe a personal workspace. Enterprise privacy policy.
Our recommendation for teams is to choose one document type and name its reviewer before broad adoption. Record the account, workspace, approved source material and expected result. Keep a copy of the starting document and compare the final version against it. That gives a team a concrete way to decide which tasks benefit from the new sidebar and which still need a different process.
