The wider GPT-6 model directory also covers Astra, the original Sol and Luna. Those model names remain useful when comparing workloads or reading an older example. A GPT-6.1 label on a new release does not rename the models used in previous tests.

GPT-6.1 release date and availability

OpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29, 2026. The launch lists Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu access in Work and Codex, alongside API access. The release notes describe a rollout beginning with Pro and expanding to the other paid plans. Use the account’s model picker to check whether access has reached your installation; managed workspaces also have model permissions.

OpenAI’s announcement places Sol in Work and Codex rather than ordinary Chat. For a missing model, first check the product surface, current client and workspace permissions. The access guide explains the broader product and account checks; the Sol access section focuses on this release.

GPT-6.1 vs GPT-6: where to start

GPT-6.1 Sol upgrades the original GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI reports improvements across coding, professional work and computer use, with performance approaching Astra on selected evaluations. For your own work, compare a saved task with the same files, tools and success criteria before changing a default.
