OpenAI Sponsored Agents: What Advertisers Need

OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents and expanding ChatGPT Ads with AI campaign tools plus HubSpot and Shopify integrations.

OpenAI Sponsored Agents are a new ChatGPT Ads experience that lets a person start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad. OpenAI announced the test on September 16, 2026, alongside an Ads Manager plugin for ChatGPT Work, AI creative tools, and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. Sponsored Agents are currently being tested with select advertisers in the United States; the announcement does not describe a general public rollout.

OpenAI Sponsored Agents: what was announced

The core change is a conversational step after an ad click. OpenAI says a person can ask follow-up questions about a product or service and then follow a link to the advertiser’s website when ready. The sponsored conversation is distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation the user started. That separation is important: the agent represents the advertiser, not an independent ChatGPT response.

OpenAI gives a furniture-shopping example in which a user might ask about dimensions, seating capacity, or care. The announcement establishes the interaction pattern but does not promise that every advertiser, market, product category, or ChatGPT user can access it now. It says the test is limited to select U.S. advertisers.

For businesses, this creates a different task from writing a conventional ad. The advertiser must plan what the agent can explain, which information it can use, when it should link to a destination, and what it must not claim. For a reusable way to define inputs, constraints, and expected outputs, see our prompt library. That is our editorial recommendation, not a configuration procedure published by OpenAI.

ChatGPT Ads Manager plugin and AI creative tools

OpenAI also announced that advertisers can use natural-language prompts to create, update, and analyze campaigns in ChatGPT through the Ads Manager plugin for ChatGPT Work. The official article says marketers can turn a website or brief into a campaign, inspect performance, and request recommendations for next actions. It does not say the plugin removes account review, billing, campaign review, or the advertiser’s responsibility for the result.

Inside Ads Manager, AI assistance can suggest ad copy and imagery based on a landing page and campaign objective. Advertisers can review and edit those suggestions before deciding whether to use them. A separate opt-in text-customization feature can adapt existing headlines and descriptions to the conversation context and translate ad copy to a user’s preferred language.

OpenAI’s Ad Tools Terms place responsibility for campaign materials, settings, accuracy, completeness, current information, and substantiation on the advertiser. The terms also say generated creatives are not guaranteed to be accurate, complete, compliant, or suitable for a particular use. In practice, an AI suggestion should enter a review queue, not bypass one. A useful review checks the landing-page claim, offer terms, availability, required disclosure, image rights, and whether the destination actually supports the promise.

Our guides directory shows the site’s general approach to separating source facts, decisions, and unresolved items. Applied here, the source fact is that OpenAI launched these tools; campaign approval, creative acceptance, and performance remain account-specific outcomes.

HubSpot and Shopify integrations

The announcement names HubSpot as OpenAI’s first CRM partner for ChatGPT Ads. OpenAI says businesses using HubSpot can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create ads, track performance, and follow up on leads in HubSpot using HubSpot context. This availability is about the integration described in the announcement; it does not mean every business automatically qualifies for every advertising feature.

OpenAI also says U.S.-based Shopify merchants can use a ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store to create and manage campaigns. Product information is integrated through Shopify Catalog, and the announcement says international availability is planned for September 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads are available. That date is a stated rollout target, not proof that every market or merchant will have access on that date.

These integrations reduce tool switching, but they also make data ownership and permissions more important. Before connecting a CRM or store, our recommendation is to document which account is authoritative for campaign settings, who may publish changes, which conversion events are used, and how access will be removed when a team member changes roles. For a related example of product-level administration and control changes, see our ChatGPT Enterprise admin controls update.

Access, beta limits, and advertiser responsibility

OpenAI’s Sponsored Agents interest form says access is limited and subject to review. It says submitting the form does not guarantee participation or a launch date. The form also notes that beta eligibility may include creative automation, automatic bidding, and a minimum daily ad spend for 28 days, while stating that final criteria and the spend amount and currency will be confirmed before onboarding. We therefore do not infer a universal minimum budget.

The separate Ads Manager setup guide describes five account steps: create the account, complete onboarding and verification, complete account information, configure billing and payment, and invite team members. It says campaigns will not deliver until required setup is complete. Account approval and Sponsored Agents beta participation are related operational gates, but the official pages do not say they are the same approval.

The Ad Tools Terms treat the advertiser as responsible for a Sponsored Agent’s content, configuration, actions, output, and advertising materials. They also restrict prohibited or misleading uses of Creative Tools, including configurations that imply access to non-public information about an OpenAI user or their interactions. This article summarizes those operational points and is not legal advice; advertisers should read the current terms for their own use.

A practical readiness checklist

The following checklist is our recommended preparation sequence, not an OpenAI certification:

  1. Confirm that the business has an eligible ChatGPT Ads account and has completed verification, billing, and team access setup.
  2. Write an approved source sheet for products, pricing, availability, warranties, and prohibited claims.
  3. Define the Sponsored Agent’s allowed questions, escalation path, destination links, and refusal boundaries.
  4. Review AI-generated copy and imagery against the landing page and current terms before publishing.
  5. Test a small set of real customer questions, including ambiguous requests, unavailable products, and requests for discounts the advertiser has not approved.
  6. Record who approved the campaign, which source version was used, and how results will be evaluated.

Teams should also separate access from effectiveness. An enabled account or installed integration proves that a tool is available; it does not prove that the campaign is accurate, compliant, or valuable. Define an acceptance measure before increasing spend, such as qualified destination visits or completed lead actions, and retain a manual review path for material changes.
